Meet Johanna

Johanna Mueller is an artist and entrepreneur, born and raised in Denver, CO, now residing in Greeley, CO where she co-owns and operates Wonderhand Studios, a cooperative printmaking studio. Her artwork utilizes printmaking mediums, primarily detailed engravings centering on animal themes. She earned a BFA in printmaking from The Metropolitan University of Denver and an MFA in printmaking from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. She has exhibited widely across her home state of Colorado, as well as nationwide, and is represented by Kuehl Fine Art in Trinidad, CO and Keep Contemporary Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.

Learn more about Johanna in our Q+A!

What are you Known for?

I am a printmaker!

I make traditional hand pulled prints called "relief engravings.” They are in the block print or relief family of printmaking, which refers to two surfaces, one lower than the other, so that the highest surface prints. I hand carve each image with small but tough tools called burins, or gravers. The remaining surface is rolled with ink and pressed through the printing press. Each print taken from the plate is part of an edition, and numbered.

Printmaking is a complex but beautiful way to make images, and for me the best way to show my visual voice to the world.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am fascinated by art history intertwinement with spirituality. Humans have forever made art to commemorate what is important to them, which was often their spiritual beliefs or religion. I love seeing the importance of animals in ancient Egypt, and prehistoric cave paintings, to the Book of Kells and the Blue Bear outside the Denver Convention Center. Animals and the earth (and our treatment of them) are of utmost importance to me, which is just one of the reasons I choose to make art about them.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever gotten?

Ru Paul is very wise, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are gonna love someone else? Can I get an Amen!?”

What has been your biggest challenge?

As an artist, everyone has an opinion about your art, about your social media content, your framing or presentation style, etc, etc. In a graduate art critique I was told by the sculpture professor to make giant marble sculptures of my work, by the painting professor to make giant oil paintings of my work, and by the creative writing professor to write short stories about my work. None of this criticism helped! But it was another very wise professor who told me to “Edit your criticism”. By practicing this, I am able to take the criticism of others, and find the little diamond of truth to take note of, instead of running around trying to please everyone.

What was the best day at work you've had in the past three months?

A good day is a day my dog sleeps in the studio and doesn't bug me to go home early!

What are your thoughts about your city's creative scene for artists, designers, crafters, makers, and/or small businesses?

I live in Greeley, and though most people know Greeley for one thing, or nothing, it is an affordable place to live, so artists are abundant. In a state where the cost of living keeps rising, artists and creatives are still able to open shop, live and work in the arts, or have inexpensive studio space outside of their home. Between mural festivals, film festivals, workshops, classes and other incubator spaces to learn, the arts are alive!

What is your dream project?

To make a set for an opera!

Artist Statement

Enhanced by printmaking’s history of illustration and graphic line work, my work is reminiscent of book illustrations with compositional complexities and innumerable details. I combine the literary and mythical history of the animal with modern science to bring awareness of climate change, human encroachment on animal wilderness, and our overall need to preserve flora and fauna on this planet.

My detailed engravings often contain animals within animals, a reference to animal cognition and spirits within animal bodies. I weave personal narrative with mythical symbols and stories which make these pieces both familiar and challenging as layers of printed relief engravings meld with topographic maps, handmade papers and brushwork.

I create a sanctuary for animals which have no race, religion, or creed, can be as easily feminine as masculine or somewhere in between. Therefore, they can tell universal stories which integrate anthropology, environmental science, and spirituality – all elements of our shared humanness – better than their human counterparts.

Learn more about David in our Q+A!

How did your business come to exist? My wife and I are both photographers, and we met at a photo gallery in Denver, where we both had entered photos in a print competition. We met at the Artist Reception, began dating a year later, and three years after that we got married and started our business together.

What are you working on right now? This week included photographing a wedding in Idaho Springs, a branding photo session for a Boulder startup company, and curating artists for the upcoming First Friday Artwalk at our studio in the Santa Fe Arts District.

What are your thoughts about your city's creative scene for artists, designers, crafters, makers, and/or small businesses? Denver's art scene is amazing! We own a studio in the Santa Fe Arts District in Denver, and we are open each First Friday Artwalk where we host guests artists each month, often times new or emerging artists. The level of creativity we see each month is astounding and it's ever growing.

What do you like to do outside of work? For fitness, it's definitely mountain biking in summer and telemark skiing in winter. Creatively, its abstract painting with acrylics, listening to music, being the drummer in a band with friends, and of course taking photos any travels we happen to be doing.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received? Early on when fist starting a solo photography business, there was often the temptation to offer discounts to friends and close acquaintances to build up your portfolio or try to win clients, but it was often hard to know how to approach that as each situation is unique. Best advice for that I received was plain and simple: “Just call them all your friends and charge them the same full price”

Where do you find inspiration? Definitely light. It’s what photography is all about, so when the light is good it always makes me want to grab whatever camera I have on hand and create photos.

What is your dream project? Travel to all of the countries and regions on my “favorites” list photographing landscapes on commissioned assignments, and do some volunteer or service for local communities while I’m traveling through, particularly if it can involve photography or videography.

What was the best day at work you've had in the past three months? Some of my favorite days are the most productive ones that involve lots of creativity. One of my recent Fridays consisted of a morning Real Estate shoot for a West + Main luxury home, then a consult with a client to plan for an upcoming product content shoot, then off to our studio in Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District for the First Friday Artwalk, where we show our Fine Art Photography and also host other amazing artists for the night’s event. It’s always a great night of community and conversation involving creativity and travel.

Meet Adam Anglin

Adam Anglin (b.1984, Rogers, AR) is a fine artist and musician with a background in graphic design. Adam paints impressionist landscapes with color-field forms. Recipient of the 2024 Cherry Creek Art Festival “Emerging Artist” grant. He lives and works in Denver, Colorado.

Artist Statement - I am a self-taught landscape painter who connects synthetic and natural forms in purposeful dissonance for those who long for beauty in a world that is too often satisfied with distraction. I use vibrant color-field compositions overlaying western landscapes and interwoven perspective lines to move the viewer between worlds.

Learn more about Adam in our Q+A!

What are you known for? - I'm known for painting impressionistic landscapes that intersect with color-field and abstract compositions.

Who/What are your biggest influences? - My biggest influences are abstract painters - Frank Stella, Josef Albers, and Clyfford Still.

What is your dream project? - I've been really enjoying working bigger lately, so a dream project for me would have to involve making something huge. I love when work takes up a big wall. It's so satisfying. My work needs scale to accentuate the colors and composition of the abstract elements so if I could make some real big boys, I think the payoff would be incredible.

What are you working on right now? - Currently, I've been chipping away at some commissions. That's been a big part of my workload this year and I love it. Making something unique for a particular space or client is the best feeling. I really love when everything comes together in just the right way. I'm hoping to do more in the future.

Is a hotdog a sandwich? - Let me answer your question with a question - Is a corndog a sandwich? Or a slice of pizza? What is a sandwich? If it's bread and some other essential bits then I think we could just as easily turn this around and say, What isn't a sandwich? If I put enough croutons on my salad, am I now eating a sandwich?! Is my soup in a bread bowl actually just a really wet sandwich?! What becomes of pancakes, crepes, or tortillas? Is a taco a sandwich? Are tacos just thinly folded sideways sandwiches?! Where does it end?!

What are your thoughts about your city's creative scene for artists, designers, crafters, makers, and/or small businesses? - I'm so lucky to live in a place that really values the work of creatives. Denver has been home for me and my family for almost 20 years. We love feeling like we live in a place where artists can pursue their passions and be supported by a number of incredible small businesses. I've been lucky to be invited into some really wonderful shops, design stores, and galleries to show my work. Every artist has to figure out the right approach for them, but it's sweet to know that in Denver carving that path is encouraged in so many ways.

What was the best day at work you've had in the past three months? - Last month I showed my work at the Golden Fine Arts Festival just down the road in Golden, CO. I sold more in that show than any other show all year. I almost sold out of a new series I've been working on and I landed a pretty large commission.

Meet Berkeley Hoerr

My paintings are a celebration of color and the profound beauty that exists within the everyday. I am inspired by the quiet details of my daily life–objects, textures, and fleeting moments. I live much of my life outdoors, where I notice and record moments where our presence leaves its mark on the landscape and how our environment shapes us in return.

Color is central to my practice. It allows me to turn these familiar moments into something extraordinary. I use bold hues and unexpected combinations to invite viewers into my world, where ordinary scenes are actually vivid expressions of connection, resilience, and constant change.

My work is a call to pause, to look closely, and to embrace the richness of our shared experiences. By magnifying everyday moments, I aim to inspire a deeper connection to the world around us and a renewed sense of wonder in the small details of our lives.

Learn more about Berkeley in our Q+A!

What are you working on right now?
Right now I am starting work on a series of large scale oil paintings based on photographs from my trip down the Grand Canyon this fall. I took photographs of different textures throughout the canyon along our 24 day rafting trip. I’m zooming in on each subject so much that although the paintings themselves are realistic they feel abstract because of the close-up scale.

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work I like to spend time outdoors. As much as I love trail running and mountain biking, I also enjoy moving slowly. Looking is my favorite thing to do. Observing small moments in nature feels monumental.

What is your dream project?
My dream project is a large-scale installation of my palette scrapes series. I would love to frame each palette scrape individually and hang them in a huge grid. I’ve done smaller-scale installations of them before but would love to see 60 or so of them hung together on one wall.

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is mixing paint. I started oil painting when I was eight years old and would copy Old Masters' paintings. In doing so, I became an expert at matching colors and it's still one of my very favorite things to do. I love adding unexpected pigments to a big pile of paint, smushing it around with my palette knife, adjusting until I get just the right color.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in the outdoors and in the mundane routine of my life. I’m much more interested in painting subjects that are not already considered beautiful, but instead become beautiful through the act of painting them. I think inspiration only works up to a point. I am a much bigger believer in going to work everyday and working even when inspiration hasn’t “struck.” I think it is the process of painting that propels my ideas forward.

What are your thoughts about your city's creative scene for artists, designers, crafters, makers, and/or small businesses?

I love Denver’s creative scene! I have a studio at Prism Workspaces, where I’m surrounded everyday by other artists working in a variety of media. I’m constantly amazing by the creativity and talent of other Denver artists.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received?

The best piece of advice I have ever received was from my college painting professor: “Don’t wait for inspiration, just show up and work everyday.” It’s a motto I continue to live by.

Meet Jean Philippe Menetrier

Jean Philippe (JP) Menetrier was born in Besançon; a small town in the Burgundy region of France. The introverted middle child of three boys, JP grew up on an active farm and was enchanted by nature and the outdoors from a young age. Once introduced to music and film in his teen years JP’s imagination started to incorporate counterculture and the arts. He DJ’d vinyl throughout his college and following years and maintains his hearty collection to this day.

After moving to the United States in 2007, JP began experimenting with black and white photography as well as found object sculpting. His artistic passions developed into abstract painting and drawing during early COVID isolation. His passion to create art is only surpassed by his love of his daughter (Vezia), and sneakers (Jordans).

You can visit JP and his other artworks currently hanging at Honey Hill Coffee Shop, the ART Hotel, and Satchel’s on 6th Restaurant.

Learn more about JP in our Q+A!

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working with a mix of acrylic and ink on heavy paper. I also have another station in the studio where I’m combining graphite with colored powder. I always keep sketchbooks and my iPad nearby so I can create wherever I go.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Close friends have reminded me to accept that my work won’t resonate with everyone—and that’s okay. It makes it all the more meaningful when someone truly connects with it.

What is your dream project?
My dream project would be something massive. When I visited the Rubell Museum in Miami, I saw a canvas as big as a warehouse wall—they had to assemble it inside the space. I was awestruck and thought, “One day, I’ll do that too.”

If you had a choice between two superpowers—being invisible or flying—which would you choose?
I’d prefer to fly. Ideally, I’d like to be a bird.

How did your business come to exist?
I work at Satchel’s on 6th restaurant, and for years I’ve had my artwork displayed on the walls there. Over time, I built a strong community of supporters, friends, and buyers—many of whom continue to follow and support my work through social media.

What are your thoughts on your city’s creative scene for artists, designers, makers, and small businesses?
I tend to be introverted and in my own creative bubble, so I haven’t always reached out as much as I could. But I’m working on that.

Where do you find inspiration?
It comes from a love of the process—creating something, playing with color and texture, and exploring new techniques. I try to let myself feel free to experiment without overthinking.

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I love being outdoors—biking, walking, and dipping my feet in the cold river in Golden (lol). I also enjoy reading, traveling, yoga, and meditation.
