Feel Good Friday: Meet this Week's Featured Non-Profit, The Zara Project

As West + Main Agents gathered for our Weekly Company Update we took a few minutes to share the non-profit organizations that mean the most to us. To kick off the year, we did a random drawing of the nominated organizations to kick off our year with a $500 donation from West + Main on behalf of the agent who nominated them.

We call it Feel Good Friday!

Meet this week’s Featured Non-Profit Organization,
The Zara Project, nominated by West + Main agent Gabe Martin:

Keep reading to see a full list of organization nominated this week!

”The Zara Project aims to feed kids on our community when they aren’t in school. So many kids experience hunger at home, and the times when they are in school might be the only time they know where they will be getting their next meal. I’m so proud to support The Zara Project and be able to give them this donation."

- Gabe Martin

The Zara Project was originally started by a young, new to the profession teacher and her social worker mom.

Twelve years ago, I was a second year teacher trying to stay afloat in my new profession. I was teaching at Johnson Elementary in Denver, CO and there was one thing I couldn’t shake each night when I left work, it was how hungry so many of my students were all of the time. This basic need for nourishment consumed them so much that it interfered with their learning. As Thanksgiving break that year neared, I noticed that contrary to my excitement for a week of freedom, many of my students did not feel the same way. I observed their anxiety levels elevate and felt this sense of dread that I could not explain nor understand. I asked what was going on and no one gave me an obvious answer until we started talking about Thanksgiving break. They weren’t excited like I was. I asked them why and some of their responses were heartbreaking... “we don’t have any money for food or anything else” or “at least we get breakfast and lunch when we are in school”. My heart sank.

A few days later, I told my mom the story while enjoying a nice dinner and some wine. In that moment tinged with irony, the seeds for The Zara Project were planted. We decided to try and help some families with food that winter break and sent out a friendly letter to friends and family asking for donations. We didn’t expect the response we got. If memory serves, I think we raised $3500 and were able to provide food for about 40 families. The next year it was 75 and the following year, we decided to turn our little project into a nonprofit. Since, we have fed thousands of families over winter break at high poverty schools in Jefferson County and Denver Public Schools and plan to feed thousands more in the years to come.

Today, I am still a teacher and the director of the Zara Project. My mom is retired and truly the glue that keeps Zara going. Her official title is secretary. New life has been injected into our efforts with the addition of two new board members, Jeremy and Chris.

Thank you all for your continued support. A little help from The Zara Project has definitely lifted some heavy burdens local kids and their families experience. We couldn’t have done all of this without you!

Our Beliefs

Every woman has the right to realize her full potential and achieve financial independence in a more egalitarian world. We believe that with the proper education, tools and action this world is possible.

Poverty often affects women the most, and its effects on them and their families can be long-lasting. Therefore, addressing women’s needs is central to improving the quality of life for not only that woman but also her family, future generations and her community. In fact, recognizing the significant role of women in economic development is the smart thing to do, as well as being socially and morally right.

We believe that achieving gender equality is imperative to developing a sustainable and just world for all, which is possible by acknowledging the crucial role that women play in the world economy.

We believe that by building up a woman’s agency and knowledge, better synergies between gender equality and economic sustainability are realized, enabling her to generate a long-term impact in both her private and public life.

Working Together

We are an ever-expanding network of affiliates who work together with referral agencies, volunteers and companies across the world to make a big impact in women’s lives. By supporting each other, we can reach a greater number of women and make our vision a reality.

This week we asked for nominations in support of the current crisis in Ukraine. Meet this week’s Featured cause, nominated by West + Main staff member
Rylie Perrault:

Learn more about Help Ukrainian media keep going

What is our Mission?

Ukraine is facing an unprecedented, full-scale war. Media across the country continue to operate under the most challenging circumstances.

They have shown extraordinary courage, but the reality on the ground is that most operations cannot continue from Ukraine alone. This fundraiser is aimed at helping media relocate, set-up back offices and continue their operations from neighboring countries.

Ways to support media activities in Ukraine (e.g., purchases of security equipment, paying drivers, medical care) are outlined below.

This campaign is run by a consortium of The Fix , Are We Europe , Jnomics and Media Development Foundation , as well as multiple media partners from across Europe.

We are working with a growing list of Ukrainian media, including Ukrainska Pravda, Zaborona, Detector Media and others. Support is allocated based on urgency of needs in the first place, then distributed proportionally.

Looking for ways to support?

Different support options:

- If you want to provide support to fund media operations in Ukraine, please reach out to Stichting Are We Europe Foundation.

- If you want to provide funds to individual media directly, contact us and we will provide a list with their details.

- We are running a separate fundraiser for the Kyiv Independent - if you can support them, please do so.

- If you are representing other independent media covering the war, want to be a part of the campaign and receive financial or any other help, please send a short description of your media and the list of urgent needs using the contact button on our fundraiser page (bear in mind immediate support on the ground is extremely difficult to provide).

- If you want to support local and regional media, which are covering the war in other parts of the country, you can also reach out directly to Media Development Foundation: https://www.facebook.com/mdfoundationUA

Learn more about Range of Motion

What is our Mission?

We believe in equal access to prosthetic and orthotic services that facilitate independence through mobility.

We recognize the dual hardships of living in poverty with a disability, and stand in solidarity with those who are made to suffer from an unequal distribution of care.

We understand that disability is caused by broken devices and broken healthcare systems – not broken bodies – and we work to increase the mobility, visibility, and dignity of all those marginalized by lack of access to rehabilitative technology.

Looking to volunteer?

This program gives volunteers the opportunity to work alongside ROMP’s in country staff to provide patient care and to exchange best-practices in prosthetic care and physical and occupational therapy.

Volunteers will put their skills into action, taking a group of patients from evaluation and casting to delivery and training in an intense clinical week in Zacapa, Guatemala or Quito, Ecuador.

They impact both patients and staff, and walk away with a greater understanding of the issues facing people with amputation in Latin America.
